Chapter 4- E-mails, & voice mails, & letters, oh my!

UPDATE 1/23 - Last night Maven e-mailed us about some numbers showing up in the Sunda Trench website on Sam's laptop. I took a screen grab and played with the contrast and they are there. Click here for the picture in the Oceanic Conspiracies Photobucket. Carol in comments mentioned that the numbers are in columns and when thinking about the Walt Whitman poem from the other night along with the equations at the bottom of each column, we glean that you need to add each column and divide by 6. Here's what you get:
a: 115 b: 104 c: 105 d: 109 e: 109 f: 114
These numbers can then be converted into ASCII characters and these come out as:
S H I M M R
What these are for and/or what they mean is as yet unclear.

~Ange

Tonight we have a voice mail and four new e-mails.

Voice Mail:
  • From Randy's Office- It's someone called Richard calling per Randy. There is an insurance pay out from an investment in a box company that has come through and would like to know how he is to get him the money.
E-mails:
Inbox
  • Subject: your mum Sender: Tracey- she called his mum and confirms that she is worried about him. She's also scored an invite for Christmas with Sam's mum.
  • Subject: [no subject] Sender: unknown- It's a random string of numbers and letters again.
    • The letters in each line are anagrams for numbers spelled out (ie. twelve, fifteen, etc). When decoded you get:
      • 12 15 22 5 25 15 21 13 1 4 12 25 which using corresponding letters of the alphabet gives you LOVE YOU MADLY
      • Is this a message from Sonya?!
      • Thanks to Ellen in comments who points out: Sun would tell Jin that she loved him every time she spoke to him, and then he would ask her, "madly?" and she would respond with "yes, madly." It became sort of an icon...especially when we got the flashback of her infidelity.
(Thanks Takes a Village for the e-mail and Jess and Fenris for working it out.)

Sent Mail
  • Subject: payout Recipient: Randy- Per message he is replying by e-mail because he can't make calls. He's happy about the box company payout and he needs the money now that he's not at Oceanic.
  • Subject: Homesick Recipient: Tracey R- Sam thanks her for the "holiday tip" but he won't be following up on it.
So is the box company THE box company? Is there more to the whole Mum part of this story? Are these messages telling us something? Does Sam not following-up on the holiday tip mean that that clue is a dead end? Could the possible Jin and Sun reference be a clue that Paik Heavy Industries is involved here?

We were told to discount information from anyone posting as OMF42 anywhere but comments at Dark. I think Flickr must be included in that?

Ange said...

Actually scratch that, I just went back, we were told OMF42 wouldn't post in chat. Nothing was said about Flickr...but anyone can make a Flicker. Good find though Oodles. We might need to look more carefully at that.

Carol Dunstan said...

ange - I've been trying to figure out why there are 6 columns (a, b, c etc) but I can't seem to get past 6 columns... Oceanic 6... there's also six rows. I think there is no significance in a, b, c other than as designating an identifier for each column. But then again, maybe there is nothing in that other than there are six columns for six letters for SHIMMR

find815 is stuck for the first time for me, dagnamit

maven said...

I hope we get something in the next 9 minutes that shows us how to measure something....

Maven - LOL! I was actually googling measurements today. Needless to say, I did not find anything mind blowing!

Carol Dunstan said...

oops, I meant I get

< D H O PorF W DB +8

I think it is more likely P given the font

memphish said...

I read it

< D H O P W 08 +8

It would make sense for them to finally put the Flickr thing in play.

Carol Dunstan said...

ok, too wierd, I googled that and the first hit is a lost-forum post about how THE numbers have those alphabet equivalents...

Patch said...

Afternoon all. You lot have been busy! :)

oodles said...

re Flickr pics by ourmutualfriend42:

Note the title of the Big Dipper pics: BigdipISS... Strange naming.
But: ISS is the abbreviation of International Space Station.

Aimless22 said...

Didn't I read somewhere that those latest numbers, if mapped out on a grid look a bit like the shape of the Big Dipper?

I didn't do it myself but I'm sure someone did....

maven said...

Clue Hunt...but my video is not loading! :(

Carol Dunstan said...

ok, find815 is doing it's loading thing

the strap reads < D B O P W DB +8

which gives us the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 and 42 (4 and 2 = D and B)

oodles said...

Great catch, Carol. I couldn't decipher the DB bit.

Carol Dunstan said...

ok, got the season 1-3 clues... need the last one

lost2010 said...

Scroll back all the way to the left and look around.

Carol Dunstan said...

wow, did that easier than I was expecting (the games have been getting harder, but I don't think anything could be harder than that mastermind one)

Carol Dunstan said...

have we decided if there is any link between the season 4 clues and the passwords? I know that is probably separate from the plot of the game, I was just wondering...

memphish said...

So I'm interested to see the 2 different passwords. The US one is another character name I think. I wonder whose S4 clue that is? Talbot's? Maybe everyone is given them to make them compliant.

oodles said...

jee Carol...
Mine does not even load ... :(

lost2010 said...

You think the password guy is going to be found at the location on the clue?

maven said...

Okay, done! Anybody get all the numbers on that final clue on the shelf? I wrote it down, but, with my eyes, I'm not sure of some of them.

Do we think the light Sam saw would be the sky turning purple? Although, that was during the day, wasn't it? Could be Naomi's helicopter going down.

memphish said...

I wrote down:

SN 10 19 4 4 1 5 8 5 19 21
23 13 4 21 11 13 6 7 20

I think it was some sort of green phosphoresence. A quick google got me nothing. Maybe it was The Flying Dutchman going back to the deeps. :D

maven said...

Memphish: We were pretty close. I got

10 19 4 4 1 5 8 6 19 21 23 19 4 21 11 13 6 7 20

maven said...

Well, I don't want to discuss what the meaning of that bottle would be until everyone has gotten to that point!

maven said...

Memphish: I think you've got the right numbers. Someone on Dark wrote down the same ones as yours. Good eyes!

Beverly said...

Can someone explain to me why everyone thinks Sonya knows celestial naviagtion? Did I miss something? I can see believing that she sent the LOVEYOUMADLY email but the only thing that I know of that dealt with celstial navigation was the numbers on the sunda trench site and even taht is speculation.

I'm confused.

memphish said...

Lostit, that's just speculation on our part. We've got nothing solid to base it on.

TakesaVillage said...

I changed the numbers to letters and anagramed them, didn't see anything, but my eyes aren't as good as they used to be.Can guys join the over 50 club too?

Carol Dunstan said...

purple sky, green fog

isn't odd fog a Bermuda Triangle thing?

memphish said...

Just realized that 1 week from right now "Through the Looking Glass" will be airing. To quote Kyle, "EEEEE!"

maven said...

Hey, takes a village: Of course! You're in! LOL

That light almost looks like the aurora borealis...

Tess315 said...

memphish
I got the same numbers
takesavillage
Yes you can join
carol
Here I go again dragon's triangle.
I know he's not quite in the right spot for that. lol

ular97 said...

There is another triangle in that part of the world too, can't recall what they call it however. I got the same numbers as well. I got the maps all really easy...I am so impressed with myself. LOL

memphish said...

It seemed to be at water level though didn't it? Rather than up in the sky? It made me think of the green flash, but that's at sunset, not night. I think beds of plankton can do things like that too, but not shut themselves off.

It's kind of like Desmond's hatch light in reverse.

ular97 said...

If your over 60 do you get to be head honcho? LOL

maven said...

Here's stuff on Auroral Forms and Magnetism. There are southern auroras, too!

Tess315 said...

I wrote down all the coordinates we were suppose to plot. In case we might need them.

Ellen said...

I agree Maven! I looked at that twice because the first time caught me unaware and I barely glimpsed the greenish light, so I did it again. Definitely looks like some kind of borealis, southern lights maybe?

memphish said...

Wiki article on Bioluminesescence. I also clicked on the Foxfire link and it mentioned Ben Franklin used it on an early submarine.

ular97 said...

Reminds me of a movie not long ago. These people saw something like that..they got near it and it was a glowing, abandonded ship. Of course there were ghosties and goolies..really a cheapo film.

maven said...

Ular97: You're President of the club! LOL

ular97 said...

Oh wow...now where did I put my Presidents hat? Or was than a dunce cap? LOL

Beverly said...

Thanks, memphish! I was afraid I missed a clue.

Speaking of missing clues, what is this about numbers from the last clue on the shelf? I don't remember seeing any numbers. I'll have to go back and look again.

I did notice the bottle. At first I thought if it might be a clue to who might be helping Sam, but I don't think tha'ts possible if we have the timeline right (just before Christmas 2004).

Tess315 said...

maven
I second the motion. on ular97 as president.

maven said...

Did the lights look like this?

Twinkle said...

I'm just glad you over 50's make the time to figure stuff out for me. My young kids and husband thank you for keeping me from spending all my day on the computer. You definitely enrich my Lost experience.

So more names of characters supposedly from season 4 tonight? Bummer. I sure hope something comes from that other stuff you're working to figure out.

Beverly said...

I almost forgot - I belong to the old broads club, too. Grandchild #1 is too cute for words and grandchild #2 is due in June!

maven said...

Carol Dunstan said...

lostit, the numbers are on the bottle

Twinkle said...

Maven, yes. But I can still hope that it was just Smokey glowing.

maven said...

Welcome, lostit! Now we need the grandparents club! LOL (BTW: Not to brag, but here are pics of my 4 month old granddaughter!)

Twinkle said...

We already caught that Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute was where Hurley and Libby were. I wonder if that will play into S4 again?

ular97 said...

Oh boy, I can be an old broad too. I got my first great grandchild last month...a boy named Hayden

Beverly said...

Oh! On the bottle! I noticed where the bottle was from but I didn't notice the numbers. Are they the same as the Dharma numbers on bottles we've seen in the past?

maven said...

Okay, so who's pill bottle is that? Captain Ockham's or one of the crew?

Tess315 said...

maven
Thanks. Did I ask?? lol
I seen the numbers on the bottle.
I thought we might need the coordinates from the clue hunt game.

Patch said...

Maybe it's the mysterious Owen's bottle of Dharma drugs?

maven said...

Sorry, sayid'sgirl. I deleted comment. Lostit was the one who asked! That's what you get for being in the over 50 club! LOL

Twinkle said...

Link to bottle picture. They aren't the same numbers. Why are they labeled "SN"? Besides being a bone thrown to fans, why would someone on board have medicine from a U.S. mental health institute? Unless the medicine is Talbot's?

Also the abbreviation for it is SRMHI. Initials look slightly familiar anyone? Missing an M though.

Tess315 said...

I vote it's Talbot's bottle of meds.

ular97 said...

maybe it is Sams, maybe we are following a physico (hmmm think that is spelled wrong)all over the world.

maven said...

So we also get the Swan playing cards, a Swan logo on the door and the Swan Dharma Film. I feel hit over the head with Swans! LOL

maven said...

SN usually means Serial Number, doesn't it?

Tess315 said...

maven
No biggie. I figured you meant someone else. :)

Patch said...

Just looking up meanings of SHIMMER because I think that's what we are meant to be making of SHIMMR.

To shine with a subdued flickering light.
2. To appear as a wavering or flickering image, as in a reflection on water or through heat waves in air.

Does that remind anyone of anything? Walt and Sonya's shimmering images? Are they Shimmerers? *lol*

maven said...

Can anyone make out what the other bottle on that shelf is?

maven said...

What kind of medication do you take once daily with food? Isn't Memphish's hubby a doctor?

Joseph Finchum said...

Yes Macen, it did look like that, but at the same time it had that funnel/tornado shape and seemed to be eminating from the water line.

Twinkle said...

Ah! Serial Number. Thanks, Maven. I'm pretty sure the image on the door was a crane not a swan. I checked it a few times and compared it with the cards.

Night all! Happy sleuthing!

Tess315 said...

maven
The only thing I can make out is HYD
Then I think the first word in the directions looks like For
Then at the bottom it either says No. 1 or Net
Maybe hydrogen peroxide?

ular97 said...

Maven..I think the other one may be hydrogen peroxide. The shape of the bottle and the first few letters.

oodles said...

What about the markings in the top left corner and the writing "DEPTHS" underneath the First Aid cabinet and the writing going across the words "First Aid". It looks pasted in to the picture and lacks perspective. ???
I haven't seen the other lclue hunts. Is that some kind of artist's watermark or could it be of relevance?

Patch said...

oodles- There's been stuff overlaid all the clue hunt pics so far.

maven said...

Thanks, gang. It is probably hydrogen peroxide. It is next to the First Aid Station after all!

oodles said...

ahh, thanks Patch!

jess4ua said...

NEW POST!

ular97 said...

I went back to look at the light on the water again. If you zoom in when he says look closer...and really look you can see a rounded top to the green. Like the top of a dome or something.

Joseph Finchum said...

Actually I think that stuff has been overlaid on everything, Sams home desk, the desk on the ship, the background images. Everything.

And I meant Maven up there not Macen... sorry. Anybody getting anything from those numbers, I tried Ascii and Hex and all that but didn't find anything theere?

Carol Dunstan said...

maven, I'll have a play with the other bottle in a minute.

I do like the SHIMMR being SRMHI plus an M... SRMHI Medicine? And yes, I think it's fairly obvious from this that it is going to be in season 4 in some way. I think anything in these clue hunts has to be taken as spearate from Sam's world otherwise it gets too complicated... why would someone on board have Swan cards?

Anonymous said...

You guys are amazing to figure the all these puzzles out...particularly the one just listed above by Carol. I really appreciate all the help on the blog... ;)

And Maven, thanks for the link to the wiki article on the northern and southern lights...and of course, SHIMMR could be referring to those too, as well the Santa Rosa Mental Hospital.
