Chapter Three Summary - Reading between the lines.

Sam's Story
hols

  • Chapter three kicks off with Sam trying to negotiate his way off the Christiane 1.

  • Mr. Ockham informs Sam that they will not be returning to Jakarta until January (after Christmas) and that there is no way he can deviate from the search for Black Rock just to allow him to jump ship. He reminds him to report for his 3am shift.

  • With nothing better to do and finding an opportunity (with Talbot heading off somewhere), he sneaks into Talbot's cabin and has a dig around. Eventually he finds a briefcase with the initials AMM on it, and a document within (on the salvage of the Black Rock) that links Talbot to the Maxwell Group and the group itself to Widmore.

  • Sam is caught leaving Talbot's cabin by the man himself. He claims the door was open and he was just shutting it, but Mr. Talbot is obviously suspicious.

  • Back in his cabin Sam writes to Tracey once again, this time the only favour he asks is for her to contact his mother and let her know he is alright but that he won't be home for Christmas.

  • He also receives and replies to an email from "Ian and Pam", who appear to be Sonya's parents. They give Sam their support and ask him to come and stay with them. Sam tells them he is out of the country but he is thinking of them and will get in touch some time in the new year.

  • Finally, he receives a new mystery e-mail. This time with a string of letters. Some of which appear to be in a slightly small typeface with a space after them.

  • Later. While taking a breather on deck (presumably during his 3am shift), Sam hears some strange noises from below and comes across some strange anomalies in the control room. The radio is crackling and all the screens seem to be going crazy and making strange beeps and chirps. Sam's never seen that before.

  • Sam returns to his cabin and e-mails Tracey about this. While waiting for her reply he decides to see if he can find out some more information about the significance of the name "Maxwell" by searching on "Answermyquestions.org". The most interesting result was relating to James Clerk Maxwell, a pioneer in the field of electro-magnetism.

  • Tracey replies to his e-mail and tells him that it was probably caused by lightning or a temporary failure inside the system. Although she does mention that it could have been caused by a really strong wave of electromagnetic energy.

  • Tracey's email takes a strange direction however when she suggests to Sam that he may need a holiday and suggests he check out the "BaliHolidayFun.com" web site. A website that appears fake (see clues section).

  • Around the same time Sam receives a voice mail message from Sean Dowling at Oceanic Air. Mr. Dowling informs Sam that his loyalty flyer points have been revoked due to his dismissal and that he shouldn't try and use them. There is however something strange about this message (see clues section).

  • With some time to himself, Sam has figured out that those two mystery e-mails he received earlier contain co-ordinates. He plans to hack into Talbot's chart plotter to find out what they point to.

The Clues
screen flash

  • Talbot's "deep pockets" - He relies on a syndicate, which allows them to plunder heritage sites without tarnishing their reputations.

  • The Document that links Talbot with Maxwell (could this be the "Syndicate"?) and Maxwell with Widmore.

  • The initials on the Briefcase are AMM which seems to refer to a number in Talbot's phone for "A. Mullins".

  • Talbot's mobile phone (used to get the code to the briefcase).

  • The altered letters in the second mystery e-mail are AABBCFC, which when changed to number (A=1, B=2, etc) give 1122463 which read as a co-ordinate is 112.2363 and works with the numbers in the previous email (-11.1748) to give a location in the Sunda Trench.

  • The season 4 clue this episode was a Tunisian Newspaper with an article about flight 815 and Oceanic closing the investigation.

  • The passwords for that clue were "Charlotte Lewis" and "36-15-28"

  • It seems the Maxwell group may well have been named after James Clerk Maxwell.

  • When e-mailing the contact at the BaliHolidayFun.com website (baliholidayfun@gmail.com) you receive a garbled response from a Mr. Ole, but included in the email are fragments of a URL that leads to http://www.find815.com/steg/stegosaurus.png. The subject of the reply email "Amuses Mr.Ole" turns out to be an anagram for "Samuel Morse". Meanwhile the phone message from Sean Dowling contains Morse Code that reads "OPENSTEGO". An application that opens hidden information contained within a file. When run against the stegosaurus.png file it is apparent something is hidden. The suggestion seems to be that the password is somewhere in the clues listed below (from Sam's Video Diary).

  • Sam mentions several things during his video diary that may be clues. While talking about Sonya he mentions that she liked things to be straight forward and out in the open. He also said he feels it is good to get things off his chest.

  • It is worth noting that on his chest there are some figures that appear to be numbers and a minus or dash. By the end of the video these numbers have changed. At the start this appears to read "79-" by the end it is less clear but appears to be something like "7S2". The only thing that is clear is that they change.

  • There are several video flashes during the diary, the most significant of which appears to be something that is clearly braille code. Several possible translations of this have been made so far. But nothing is definite.

Other Characters
OScar

  • Mr Ockham - As stubborn as ever, he refuses to get Sam off his ship. He does however answer some of his questions.
  • Oscar Talbot - Continues to grow even more suspicious about Sam. It seems to Sam that whoever his mystery contact is within Maxwell, they haven't told Talbot to expect Sam's company on this trip.
  • Tracey R - Continues to aid Sam and perhaps us in direct and indirect ways.
  • Ian and Pam - Likely Sonya's parents. They are concerned about Sam.
  • Sean Dowling - Continues to be a long distance pain in the butt for Sam. Seems Oceanic aren't going to do him any favours.
  • A.M. Mullins - Apparently the owner of Talbot's briefcase.

It's a bit of a strange one this weekend with an important piece of information not quite revealed yet. Hopefully we will have an update for you some time today or tomorrow with that password we need to get into the hidden file inside the picture. Stay tuned folks!

Note: It is likely that this Experience was postponed due to the writers strike and so this is why the current in game time seems to be earlier then the launch date we were given for Oceanic.

While scanning darkufo's board, came across this:

Last night OMF42 kept saying things were not as they appeared to "BE". (Capitalized.)

Struck a chord because in perusing the Maxwell entries at wikipedia I noticed that B and E are present in the Maxwell equations.

Can anyone get anything out of the fact that B and E are the variables in the Maxwell equations for magnetic field and electric field.

That was me trying to use electromagneticism and others along those lines.
I was at wiki looking into Maxwell.
I found this.

His (Orsted's) findings resulted in intensive research throughout the scientific community in electrodynamics. They influenced French physicist André-Marie Ampère's developments of a single mathematical form to represent the magnetic forces between current-carrying conductors. Ørsted's discovery also represented a major step toward a unified concept of energy.

Someone on Dark's site yesterday going by Ampere gave some kind of clue I thnk. I know we discussed a little bit. I'll have to go check my old posts.
I going to go dig some more into Maxwell and Ampere.

Tess315 said...

Ok I checked my post. Someone going by ampere was telling people to be patient that the clue would come tonight. (not tonight, tonight but last night tonight.) Are you confused yet? lol
Anyway the ampere stuff is way over my head. Although he is credited as one of the main discoverers of electromagnetism.

lost2010 said...

I think I've got you. Someone going by ampere said the clue was coming Friday night.

Oh well, if they gave it out last night, I think I'm still missing it.

Wishing luck to those of you still trying.

Tess315 said...

Me too unless he was talking about the braille.

I'm starting to think that we're making this harder than it needs to be. I feel as though we're missing something but I have no idea what it is.

Brilliant summary Fenris, that must have taken ages to put together! :)

jess4ua said...

patch- I keep thinking the same thing. I have been trying a lot of diff ideas today, but nothing so far.

maven said...

I was just thinking that everyone might just be working too hard on this. Everything so far has been fairly easier (although getting harder and harder as we go along). I just don't think that TPTB intended for this to be so difficult. And it just seems to be that this game was not going the way of having to use extreme computer skills to solve anything. We're just missing something obvious. And we'll all smack ourselves on the head when it's found.

maven said...

BTW: Another fabulous wrap-up, Fenris!

lost2010 said...

Surely, it's supposed to be easier than this! I keep thinking someone will just pop in and say - 'oh obviously it's xxxx'.

Jess sent me this Braille link today, and she and I got some slightly different things than FYSB:

with
do or day
it
I
have or here
a
do or day
from or father
just

And yeah I think we may be looking too hard for something that is right in front of us.

Also I can't help but wonder if this isn't fitting with Twinkle's theory that there is basic stuff then kind of enrichment activities (that are neat but won't really matter all that much in Sam's story) for the more computer adept people.

If these types of clues are what is going to happen from here on out, it makes no sense with the help section info on find 815 that says clues are Monday to Friday, and at that site. <--this is just me wondering aloud at how fast things changed format.

I'm going to go look at more screen caps in an effort to stop calling Jess to tell her ideas about Braille!

FYSB said...

You know what else that screen grab reminds me of? Punch cards. Years ago I learned programming and we had to put together a series of punch cards with codes punched out. You ran a stack through the computer to run your program. Any chance this might be something other than Braille?

http://infolab.stanford.edu/pub/voy/museum/pictures/display/2-2-ElecKeyPunch.htm

jess4ua said...

FYSB- Way to think outside of the box. Ha, all I could come up with was dominoes, LOL! I can't get that link to work.

Capcom said...

LOL about the punch cards FYSB. I've worked with those too, when IBM still had paper timecards, etc., we ran them thru the neat-o machine that would always get jammed up. Fun stuff. It would be funny if TPTB of the game used some "ancient" geek media too for this. :o)

FYSB said...

Ha, capcom, remember the nightmare of dropping your stack of cards?!?
Jess, I'll try again to post the link correctly. it was just to a picture so you guys could see what they looked like. Wiki punch cards and punch tape.

FYSB said...

Punch Codes
Try this one. There are a boatload of codes that use them, so I don't how much this would help, but it's a nice break from decoding Braille. I couldn't find a "Maxwell Code Key" unfortunately. Or a Fishbiscuit code.

Ange said...

FYSB: That's great! When I was in college we still had to use those and I am only 34, so not as outdated as some may think. Also electromagnetic frequencies screw up computers, might be an alternate way to process data?

Apparently IBM cards were used in the army.

Although there is a page here on how they are coded I still can't get my brain around how you would tell what one said.

maven said...

You guys are so funny with these punch cards. Next you know we'll have to deal with hanging chads! LOL

My head aches thinking about all the thinking that's going into this. This game, so far, has not required this much thinking. It would seem simple...we were led every step of the way (even with the pre-release of the clues on Dark's). We've come to a place that needs a password. We're "given" what appears to be Braille to translate, but it doesn't work as the password no matter how it's tried. It has to be something simple rather than impossible...we're overlooking something. I applaud you guys for all your hard work and attempts, but I can't believe that the people here at OC and over at Dark's haven't cracked this yet. I'm sure the OurMutualFriend42 will have to drop another hint soon.

maven said...

Hope I don't sound too negative...just frustrated.

FYSB said...

Ok, my eyes are crossing. I flipped the image vertical, and using the theory that it's some sort of binary code, have been dinking around with converting it to octal numbers (it's the only 3 column number i could find). It didn't work, but they say doing these types of exercises can help stave off alzheimers, so I don't consider the afternoon a total waste.

Oh, and Fenris, I really do like your summaries. I particularly enjoy the way you convert what we've learned into a story/narrative "Sam returns to his cabin and emails Tracey" is much more interesting than just listing the facts.

lost2010 said...

Maybe the password isn't what the guy leaving the clues thinks it is. . .

No, I'm holding out hope that they know what they're doing.

Carol Dunstan said...

on the catch up again.

I have been thinking for quite some time that we need to reverse something. I think this is largely based on the fact that Ampere posted about finding the password in the video... they told us this backwards (as in the words were back to front). Is it simply the order of the Braille that should be reversed? So ijfdahixd or whatever you may think the braille is. I also think that there is going to be morse code involved with the steg pic.

I too picked up on the Fiji anagram being in the braille but put it down to seeing significance in everything since I could make anything of the remaining letters. If only a few things were different you could get "dihg fiji" out of it.

Someone (as6?) posted words for the braille yesterday but Jess has a few different ones so I might play with those later... except I finally got Moonlight download and it's just begging me to watch it... also have tummy begging me to have lunch and a computer table begging me to buy it

Thanks for the compliment FYSB!

I wasn't sure if people would warm to my format for the summaries, but I wanted to separate the story from the clues and the rest kind of came from that. Glad you like it. :)

Tess315 said...

I think the way you do your summaries a great. It lets the people who are behind or are just following the blog feel like they've been a part of the game.
I think it makes the game easier to follow.
And of course ange and jess are doing great jobs too.

AS6 said...

Yeh Carol that was me yesterday. I've gotten nothing else from it. The braille, forwards and backwards, uses the same basic set of "symbols" over and over again.

I think we have to look deeper than we are even if we don't come up with anything. I remember with TLE people running just about everything through HEX and ASCII converters. Now THAT was a hell of a lot of fun.

Scoutpost said...

Hi everyone. I have been out of the loop the past couple of days and am trying to catch up. I am stuck on the whole openstego thing. How do you download it and get it to work? I clicked download, but then I am clueless (so don't look for me to be much help with a password-LOL!!)

Beverly said...

Someone mentioned "hatch" as a possible password. I rewatched the video and that part about getting out of his shell would certainly go well with "hatch". I assume someone has already tried it?

Another thought - the maxwell-group.com website gives the date that it will be "back" online. Could thta date be meaningful somehow?

And the numbers on Sam's shirt look like 79-2 to me.

Carol Dunstan said...

I didn't mean to reverse the symbols, but reverse our results when trying them as paswords. Ah well.

here's a thought out of left field... what if we are to read the braille as Morse code? There being three rows of code, two dots side by side representing a dash? Highly unlikely but I'd like to know why it seems like it should be simple yet what seems the logical (and next logical) answers aren't working.

Carol Dunstan said...

I've taken another look at the vid paying close attention to Sam's shirt. I don't think it changes at all, it's just with wrinkles and folds and stuff it isn't so clear, particuarly on individual frames.

Patch said...

I agree Carol, I don't think it changes either.

AS6 said...

I'll bet you that there is something really simple that we are all missing...

Have any of you guys heard anything about this? Someone posted info at Ninja's blog about it, and I find it quite worrying if it's true. It sounds like DarkUFO might be in some trouble. Here's the link to the thread at DocArtz. I point out that no spoilers are posted in that thread.

Nice, Patch. I find the whole thing very, very funny. Just goes to show you how much the show means to certain groups of viewer.

I've also read some of DocArtz's stuff since the first ARG. Seeing him insulted and abused on DarkUFO's blog annoys me. Some people have no idea what they're on about.

As for spoilers, I love it when we get little tidbits that hint at a bigger surprise...but an entire rundown? That's a bit much. Talk about ruining the surprise.

Good Morning!
I saw Cloverfield last night. It was great go see it! I also saw one of our little Braille symbols in the center of the screen through the first half of the movie. It looked just like the day/do symbol but with 4 dots across the top. It can't be a really braille sign unless it's flipped around.

I don't really think it's a clue or that Cloverfield has anything to do with the game, but it made me go, "BRAILLE!" in the cinema, and then feel like I am reading way too much into things! I think it was probably there to represent disturbance on the Cloverfield video camera.

Okay that said I'm still going to mess with the braille. But, I've been wondering, what if we use the braille as numbers and add 792- or variations there of as a phone/number prefix with them?

Lastly, Dark UFO has this to say as of 6:55 am:
Please note that anyone claiming to be Ourmutualfriend42 on the chat room is fake. They will not post there.

I hope this avoids any confusion.

Ange=MORE confused!

ular97 said...

The person who gave them the early clues/answers at DarkUFO was fake? I guess I am confused as well. If someone is a fake how can they give information that isn't false like them? Never mind...this is all to confusing for my teeny little brain! Besides it turned 62 last month and I am sure it is shrinking daily now.

Ange said...

Ular97: You should get a Nintendo DS and brain train LOL!

In the comments at Dark it goes on to say:
Bolivar Baez said...

So Dark, what you are trying to say is that only the first original post was real, the rest was fake?

DarkUFO said...

I'm saying that nothing it chat should be believed 100% as anyone can log in with that username. There are trolls a plenty ;)

Which still doesn't really answer whether the initial contact was legit, even though it let to legit in-game stuff.

Hmmm I feel like they are trying to tell us something without directly telling us something.

ular97 said...

I do have Nintendo DS and I have several of those brain games. If I spend time doing that, I don't have time to play on the computer and join in the 815 fun. Having lived in Indonesia, and traveled there including many trips to Bali, and having gone to Fiji and Australia I have checked on different area's to see if I could come up with anything that might fit into any of the clues...so far nothing!

jess4ua said...

Hi Everybody!

So it seems we were correct all along. The info that ourmutualfriend42 gave, was in game. However, he was spoiling. Simple enough. Great, now we can move on.

I am going to see Cloverfield today! And I will be on the lookout for that Braille to see what I think. You never know, Rachel Blake showed up at Comic-con and there have been commercials. ;)

ular97-Wow, you sure get to travel a lot! Also, people are hacking into the game and getting info ahead of time. There have been posts about the next weeks part of the game all along from those inclined to do so.

As far as the password, still thinking.....

shellma said...

Morning all!
Ditto, Jess.
I figured all along that OMF42 had just hacked in and got the info like all the other spoiler stuff was found over at Dark's. OMF42 just wanted to look like an offical ABC leak.....

ular97 said...

Hubby trained natives to run heavy equipment in one of the worlds largest gold/copper mines at Tembagapura, Irian Jaya,Indonesia. Now known as West Papua. We got to go on vacations every 6 months on a large expense account. We no longer get to do all that traveling, since he changed companies. It got to unsettled and rough for us in those countries. They all have a bit of dark mystic (for the lack of something else to call it) so it fits in with the game and Lost.

ular97 said...

Sooo...does that mean my apology to DarkUFO'ers was something not necessary? They really were not in-game...just cheating? Where is that Nintendo DS??? Need to try to invigorate my brain!

shellma said...

So....
we are still no closer to cracking this password.....
Anybody thingk maybe we just haven't got it yet? Sheesh...I don't know. I wonder if they can continue tomorrow if we haven't figured it out?

shellma said...

Ular....I do believe Dark when he said he was contacted by ABC. But I just did not think they would spoil their own clues like that.

Eugene said...

Hey guys. I noticed on ABC last night that one of the ads had changed. The Lost is Found ad has some lines that look like sound waves. They are about 9 seconds in at abc.go.com. Something? Maybe nothing? Any thoughts?

Fenris said...

Morning all (well afternoon for me, I overslept). Here's a long one for you:

1) Thanks for the compliments Sayid's Girl/Takes a Village and I would have to join in with the compliments for Ange and Jess because without them doing most of the weekday posts I would have nothing to summarize! You really can't do something like this without a good team, which leads me to...

2) I think a big part of the problem at DarkUFO is simply the size of it all. They have over 50 blog authors. Can you imagine that? It's no wonder they often seem to be competing against themselves for the "big scoop", and with 50+ authors you can imagine how many comments/chat posters they have. It's no wonder the site is spoilerific and if any site was likely to end up with a whole synopsis for an un-aired episode it is them. Having said that, I've found they *usually* label their spoilers well enough to avoid them.

Now I agree 100% with Doc Arzt that the less spoilered you are the more you enjoy it. I mean it's called a SPOILer. But having said that, it's very easy for someone that has actually seen episodes of season 4 to speak out against spoilers. The reason people go to spoilers is impatience and we have had quite a long wait. It is only natural some people will give in and check out spoilers. Of course that is exactly the reason to make sure you never have a whole synopsis out there.

What worries me now though is the possibility of reading a sub-conscious spoiler. That is people that have read the synopsis, then dropping theories and hints which are exceptionally accurate due to having seen detailed information on a future episode. I am always wary of people that are privy to inside info, because of things like that. Fortunately most people that get the inside scoop are considered trust worthy. But now....well how many people will have seen that synopsis?

Then again, this being Lost, seeing a synopsis for a random episode ahead of time may just make the readers even more confused then everyone else. Lol. I heart Lost.

Okay so:

3) I'm proud that so many people are keeping on this clue over the weekend and trying so many things. It would be very easy just to sit back and wait for some new info. I am currently wondering however like many others, what exactly are TPTB thinking with this. Either they've made a real screw up with the hardness curve, they've overcomplicated things by dropping a simple clue in with a load of more complex bonus clues thereby confusing everyone or we had things right early on but we are missing a vital piece of info that we won't get until Monday (or later) that is stopping us get the complete password.

Right now I'm kinda suspecting the later because we had that a few times in the first ARG and although this is a different company I have come to the conclusion that these groups, like writers of bad murder mysteries, like to give the illusion of complexity by having people waste their time guessing away at things that they do not have anywhere near enough info to actually be correct on.

Poirot would be turning in his grave, were he real and dead. Lol.

Fenris said...

Shell - Maybe Dark was contacted by ABC in the same way that Sam was contacted by the Maxwell Group.

I don't mean they hid a message in a picture of Darks lost girlfriend. I mean maybe the contact wasn't quite a representative of the whole group even if they worked there.

Eugene - good work. If I have time today (given I'm up waaay late) I will check it out and see if I can find something.

Actually I said this before, but while we're scrounging for clues it may be worth re-checking old sources. For instance, has anyone phoned the Oceanic Hotline recently? Maybe worth emailing that maxwell contacts address again too.

Eugene said...

Hey Fenris,
Good points you made above. There's been a weird tension over the last few weeks bewteen Doc, Dark, The Tail Section and Buddy TV. I wish they would try to remember this is just a game and just a TV show. (Lord knows I have to remind myself often enough.

I just mentioned over at Dark's site about the "Lost is Found" video as well. But I suspect we'll be chasing our tails over the Stego PW for the next 24 hours.

I heart Lost. too. But I also heart toast, so time for breakfast!

jess4ua said...

Eugene- I see what you are saying....I am not sure what that is. I put a screencap up HERE.
Everyone check it out and see what you think. It could just be for effect. While the waves are on the screen the narrator is talking about LOST streaming in HD.
However, I don't want to overlook anything.

FYSB said...

Good morning all! and good afternoon Fen!
I think it would be awesome if they sent Dark a message in his girlfriend's picture. Thanks for posting that info ange. I'm staying away from his site after the weirdness of ourmutualfriend's first appearance. One thing to note though, is that he specified chat. Anybody can be anybody in chat. A post on a blog is tied to your blogger id, right?

As for scrounging, have we spent enough time with the other flashes? That first white blip is intriguing, but I'm not sure if that's the one that became the picture of Maxwell.

lost2010 said...

Okay, I found a red plastic ruler to use as my red glass. I'm going to watch the video again.

But after this, I swear I'm just going to sit back and wait for someone else to find the password.

(Have lost mind - digging through toybox for discarded 3-D glasses - find red plastic ruler and think - paydirt!)

jess4ua said...

Fysb- Yeah, I am so confused now. Darkufo has posted that Ourmutualfriend42 in comments is real, just not the one in chat. I think I am just going to try to ignore it all. So far, OMF42 in comments has only given info that lead to info we got anyways (???). Still weird! So I am just going to focus on Braille, or maybe not braille. Hehehehe......
I have been looking at the other images from the video diary a lot. So far, I can't come up with anything. The Maxwell scrambled image is intriguing though. Why bother to jumble the pic? Maybe just another "side activity" as Ange and Twinkle mentioned. Or is there more to it?

Per DocArtz...Dark leaked that HIMSELF.

Shell - Maybe Dark was contacted by ABC in the same way that Sam was contacted by the Maxwell Group.

He must have been.... In his own words, he doen't say for sure that the game creators said HIS SITE would get a clue. He said....

Hi All,

Just to clear a few things up.

3) We were contacted after the first week of the game by the creators and were informed that we were the largest referring site to the official one.

4) My source at the game said has told me they would have some "interesting" ways to release info to us.

lost2010 said...

Watching it through a red filter doesn't do anything - except the braille jumps out at you a bit better.

I don't have a blue or green ruler.

FYSB said...

Poor Dark, this ingame/not ingame grey area is probably more of a curse than a gift.

So, I just checked on the white blip in the beginning and it is not the scrambled image of maxwell. It looks like it could be layers though. I tried to cut it into slices along what looks like dividing lines and stack them in Photoshop, but I'm afraid my skills there are limited. Is there anyone around who can give it a shot or give me a hint? The online tutorial isn't much help.

lost2010 said...

Now, that was the other thing that looked odd when I used the filter - that first white blip almost looks like it contains text. But I decided it wasn't, or someone else would have noticed by now.

The BHF.com website specifies that you'll have french champagne.

Anyone speak french?

shellma said...

FYSB...it's a curse he happily took on himself and ran with.

FYSB said...

lost2010, i speak a little french. i also have a very big french/english dictionary. i'm off to see cloverfield now (yay!) but i'll look into it when i get back. my only problem with using the newspaper is that logic dictates (ha!) that tracey would have to be the one to let sam know what the password is, so i will be major bummed if it's a word in a tunisian newspaper.

winged_eel said...

I was just wondering, what if the first letter in the braille code is actually a "w", and the lower left dot is just a part of the shadow nearby..that would leave something like

"Will do it, I have a..." followed by dfji.

Any ideas?

fysb - Enjoy your movie. I was just thinking of trying the words words we'd picked up elsewhere in french. I tried tsunami (les grandes vagues), Christmas (Noel), and open (transparence).

Fenris said...

Fysb - Actually it depends on the blog as to the security. Fortunatly on Blogger we are protected (kinda, you can change your display name (I very much doubt I'm the only person posting as "Fenris" on blogger), but as you can click and see their account profile it's hard to abuse).

However if you remember over at ITE in the previous arg there was a *lot* of abuse of that blogs comments. People posted as other people (often as Speaker) and to complicate things further at least one person posted nasty stuff as themselves and then claimed it was someone else posting as them (I won't name names, but they know who they are).

But then all that kind of thing is why the in game posters for the first Experience posted on blogger via Rachel Blakes blog. I don't think anyone was foolish enough to post a clue in a chat room. Although there was bonus stuff found through PMing certain tertiary characters (Jeep and Verizon peeps).

Fenris said...

Hmmm. I wonder if the Braille is actually meant to be Sam's reply to Tracey.

Where was it we were told to wait until Friday for the password clue? Was that verified as cosher?

Thinking about it. We have been removed from the direct action up until now. Why should that change? Especially with the events we are witnessing apparently happening in the past. If we think of this as a two way private communication between Sam and Tracey rather then anything involving us at all, perhaps things will appear in a different light.

If Sam is sending a private reply to Tracey from his video blog, then that must mean that the password to get into that image was around BEFORE Friday and perhaps the reason we can't make complete sense of these clues is because we are missing information that is inside that file.

Not that we hadn't exhausted are tonne of options before Fridays video.

lost2010 said...

I keep combing the e-mails from Tracey to Sam and vice versa. I know we joked around about it, but truly - if Tracey was guiding Sam to the bhf site, she was the one that was supposed to give him a password.

Which would imply that the password is either hidden in the e-mails, on the bhf website, or in the e-mail from Mr. Ole.

Strong candidates from that perspective are:

Holden
tsunami
Christmas
holiday
OK
Oklahoma
Tropicana Fantasy Delight

But I can't get any of them to work. (Along with about a hundred others)

The other thing we get the idea Sam is sending to Tracy is the video diaries. And if that's right - he seems to have sent her a scrambled up picture of Maxwell and a braille message that seems to say (with ham radio, I had Fiji). If you decide it's just a message to Tracy instead of our hint to the password, it makes a loose kind of sense.

Sorry to rattle on. I was just trying to shift my perspective a bit and see if it helped at all.

That was from OMF42, Fenny. So...take it as you will.

jess4ua said...

Fenris-
Thanks to darkvvind and those in the Find 815 chat room who spotted someone named Ampére saying "Reta loe divnie ulcec ne itap" which is "Patience clue in video later" backwards. Could this possibly have something to do with the steganography password we've been trying to uncover?

Or perhaps this person is hinting at another clue for us to dig through later on. Time will tell as the update is now less than 3 hours away.

It was some other character in chat....

jess4ua said...

Here is another thought....
Given the scrambled pic of Maxwell in the video, maybe the braille is part of the login to the-maxwell-group.com.
If that is case, maybe we won't get the password to the steg until the end.....which might give us the rest of the login.
I don't know if I believe that though, that is really stretching clues out over a long period of time. I am just trying to think of all of the possibilities. Maybe it will jog something for someone else....

Hi all,
lurking on and off today...at my wits end with the password search. I think we probably don't have all the info like Fenris said...

[Fenris said: "I think a big part of the problem at DarkUFO is simply the size of it all. They have over 50 blog authors."] -- Me too, when I saw that request that Dark put out for admin help I thought, wow, he's going to regret that I bet.

[And: "...people that have read the synopsis, then dropping theories...] -- Uh, yeah, someone dropped a HUGE spoiler bomb in one of the comments sections over there (as DarkUFO requests that they NOT do) and I read something really wild that has a lot of "gravitas" and twist to the story, that I wish I didn't see. Oh well. It's just a TV show.

Re: your Poirot comment Fenris, you kill me. :-D

Fenris said...

Thanks Jess.

Okay so given that Dark is warning people about stuff said in Chat and claiming to his knowledge the only legitimate chat clue was the very first time OMF posted there, we cannot really trust the comment about the clue being in the video.

I had a bad feeling about that backwards type to begin with. It seemed to me the kind of thing that a faker would do to try and seem legit.

So where does that leave us? Well it seems to me, either Sam and Tracey/mystery contact are communicating via stealth or Sam is trying to communicate to us via stealth. For my money I would say the former.

shellma said...

Capcom......

That whole synopsis fiasco is Dark's own doing. He has noone to blame but himself.
You might want to read DOcArtz blog.

Fenris said...

Capcom - Ouch. Yeah I am glad that I have been avoiding it over there since I heard about the synopsis.

What really worries me is if it leaks out beyond that website. I think we'll be safe here and at TLC when the season kicks off and Doc Arzt will no doubt keep close tabs on his comments (given his strong views on it) but other sites could all be dangerous places to go. Which is a problem if TPTB intend to drop more clues on blogs in the future.

The only thing I could say to those that have been spoilered by this leak is that at least, being Lost, what we think we know and what we actually know aren't that close at the best of times. As long as no one spoils the series finale, things can only get so bad (although it's easy for me to say that when I haven't read that spoiler).

ular97 said...

I sure am glad I don't go to other sites. I hang out here when I am online, and all I know about the other "stuff" is what I read in here. I don't even know how to get to this Dark site or any of the others. I lost all those sites when my laptop crashed after the last game, never tried to go back to them.

shellma said...

Sorry Fenny....
That was the Ampere guy(THanks Jess!)....
I figure they were all the same jerk and offhandedly called him OMF42.

shellma said...

Fenny, Dark got it from another website and cited it as his own. It's all over the place!!! So anyone who is spoiler(ruiner)sensitive best avoid lots of places. I know we're safe and so is Docartz.

FYSB said...

Woohoo! Back from Cloverfield! 2 thumbs up.

Fenris you make a good point about the subconcious spoiler, cuz you know some yahoo is going to do that just to look cool. It sucks that it's on Dark's site if it truly is going to be a place for ARG clues since few of us will want to risk spoiler exposure.

FWIW, i think ampere was just one of those types of people, spouting off stuff that anyone could guess. I'll believe he/she is real when he/she gives me the password.

has anybody tried "open sesame"?

lost2010 said...

fysb - yes. I tried it this morning. Nothing. . .

OT, I'm getting rather attached to Sam Thomas. I'm going to be a bit disappointed if I tune in January 31 and he isn't on the actual show. :)

lost2010 said...

I'm assuming if Sonya, the flight attendant was on the beach with the losties, she'd have identified herself. Do you suppose she was with the tailies or is just one of the nameless dead burned in the fuselage?

Twinkle said...

Sam told us about the latitude and longitude in the mystery e-mails he received. That means next week will probably consist of him investigating baliholidayfun, finding the stegged picture, and finding the password. He's not even aware of the puzzle so we need to give him time to catch up. I liked the comment (Fenny's?) that he has to hack the plotter next week so we can have an activity.

Likewise for the rest of the stuff. Until Sam is aware of the puzzle and the Morse code, I just don't think we'll get a password. That said, once he's aware of it, we might get another dropped hint so we get to it before he does. Giving us stuff ahead of time, so it trickles out instead of all coming from find815.com, could be one way TPTB are trying to spread out the load on the website and "increase" the fun.

Has anyone posted on Sam's myspace about the Morse code and the stegged picture? :-D

Tess315 said...

Wow more controversy huh.
So the only real post of OMF42 was the first one in the comments and anything after in the chat was fake. And more than likely this ampere person is fake too.
As you've all said where does that leave us.
By the way don't want to sound stupid here cause I haven't down loaded the stego program. So I don't know how it works, but are we sure there is something hidden in the picture?
I'm thinking maybe the braille is for something else. But who knows guess we'll find by Monday.

Twinkle said...

I think they'd have some explaining to do if she was alive. Aren't flight attendants taught to take charge in emergency situations? So she should have been at the forefront from the beginning. I don't want her to be dead though.

Sam is a very compelling protagonist! He's like my weekly Aussie fix, and doesn't he say all those things we girls want our men to say to us!? Guys, take note. Say it before we too are lost. ;-)

Twinkle said...

Sayid's girl: I asked on DarkUFO. They said that any other picture files get a "not stegged" message from the software. Only the picture of the stegosaurus prompts for a password.

DarkUFO said...

So the only real post of OMF42 was the first one in the comments and anything after in the chat was fake.

That's may not be quite true. The problem is we have no way to positively identity posters in the chat as their is no registration unfortunately. So basically what we're saying it to take everything with a pinch of salt in chat ;)

Twinkle said...

I really don't know to be honest. I think we're probably going to have to wait. If I hear anything I'll make a post on the fin815 blog.

LOL! Ular!

lost2010 said...

twinkle -

I think I'll hold out hope for poor Sonya. Maybe she's just not a very good flight attendant.

memphish said...

Kudos to everyone still working on this clue, if it even exists around here.

Thanks Fenris, Ange and Jess for your all your work on the blog.

I just wanted to sound off on the DocArzt, Dark controversy. The fact that DocArzt would call people on spoilers is the pot calling the kettle black. DocArzt was one of the people involved in spreading the leak of the S3 finale last year. It was only later that he had regrets. Moreover, his pointing out that Dark has this info. could potentially lead more people to it.

I think DarkUFO does a fantastic job of keeping spoilers on his spoiler pages. I agree that there might be spoiler tainted theories out there, but even then most people are good about identifying them as such. Thankfully, all this spoilerage potential will end soon and we can get back to creating whacko theories based on what we've actually seen.

memphish said...

And $.02 more -- I think Sonya died in the crash. I agree that she would have asserted some sort of leadership at either beach camp if she'd been a flight attendant. Although I suppose she could have been in the cockpit and taken by the Others from there, yet to be revealed.

lost2010 said...

memphish - That's even better. The cockpit - of course!

FYSB said...

Unless, memphish, she had been knocked unconcious by a stray coconut and lay in the jungle out of sight until Mr. Friendly found her and brought her back to OtherVille to be his Gal.

Or was that a Gilligan's Island episode? I sometimes confuse the series.

Sounds like there is as much drama in the blogaverse as there is on the island. I've been so sheltered by the LoCos, I had no idea.

memphish said...

Here's another Sonya idea. Smokey took her from the cockpit like King Kong took his lady loves. Then he came back and killed the pilot in The Pilot to rid himself of competition for Sonya's heart. This would finally explain why Smokey dealt so swiftly and brutally with the pilot. :-)

memphish said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
lost2010 said...

fysb and memphish - That's a lovely idea. Do you suppose the witch doctor knows where she is? Now if Gilligan, I mean Hurley, can just get his magic bus cranked up again, he can go rescue her.

Fenris said...

I don't know about flight attendants taking charge. Cindy Chandler was happy to sit back and let the crazed trigger happy cop run things

Twinkle - I thought most Auzzies were meant to be more like Captain Ockham. I suspect he's more from the Kevin "Bloody" Wilson school of romance. Lol.

That was a good point about Sam's progress. He seems to take about a week longer then everyone else to figure things out (to be fair though he's not exactly on real time).

I originally thought that the Maxwell search must have been the wrong website and they meant to put up the Baliday site. But they would have corrected it by now (didn't take long last time), so maybe he hasn't even found the stegged image yet. Makes sense.

But that still leaves the question: What on earth is the braille and the T-Shirt about then?

Twinkle said...

I guess we'll have to wait until Sam tells us? Maybe he's hiding secrets from us too? That's my theory anyway, only pay close attention to what will be on the find815.com test.

I'm not familiar with Kevin Wilson. I'll look him up. Sam definitely is a romantic right now. :-)

jess4ua said...

Okay, back, and Cloverfield was Awesome! Best movie I have seen in a while. I did not see any blips or clues though, the movie was too intense for me to catch it. LOL!

I tried to run the other pictures from the websites in openstego as well. I couldn't get them to work either. I think it said it had to be a .png file to work or something.

Twinkle said...

About the images and such on the tape, I wonder if it's just stuff TPTB threw in for the fans and it has no real meaning in the ARG.

Another alternative is that it has something to do with Tracey R's tape. My newest idea is that it could be the island/Smokey. The blips would reflect what Sam's preoccupied with and his emotional state. Smokey could be reading his mind and imprinting via the electromagnetism Sam's mental state along with what he's saying.

maven said...

Wow, a lot has been going on.

I saw that stuff about the synposis being posted at Dark's yesterday on DocArtz. Wonder if Dark is really going to get in trouble or not? Even though things are put into spoiler sections and you have to click on things to see them, stuff filters out in comments all over the place. I'm getting really nervous (especially as we get
closer to Jan 31st). I think I'm just staying here where it's safe.

I like that idea that our Sam is behind the times. It's like we're watching a movie and know more stuff than the characters. I think he'll start putting 2 and 2 together next week like he finally did with the coordinates. I agree that this password thing might need some more information to put it together.

shellma said...

Memphish:
In fairness, I haven't read this whole blog, it is VERY long. But this is what Doc had to say:

DocArzt said:
http://www.thetailsection.com/lost-spoilers/one-rotten-apple.php

That should explain everything. I had nothing to do with that. My most regrettable action, though, was publishing the insiderscoop synopses on the tailsection back when he (Lostfan108)used to post on ABC. I stopped eventually because it felt icky.
Please feel free to post that link on the "other blog" Michelle. Because that accusation is a total lie.

Capcom said...

I hope that DarkUFO doesn't get in any trouble either Maven. I like that site and its (Dark's) friendly spirit a great deal.

Ange said...

Wow, looks like I missed a lot today! Sorry I dropped the OMF42 info bomb and then left for the day.

To mirror what Fenris said, I am excited to see how hard we've worked on this password this weekend, while still keeping it relatively amusing. I an frustrated but it's an okay-ish frustrated.

I think this new confirm/deny/no comment list is kinda maybe adding support to my theory about this whole ARG and how I think we are viewing things that have already happened. I think that Sam has already met his fate (whatever that is) and we are being "shown" the events after the fact with messages and things edited in by whoever wants us to think we are following Sam and helping him.

Incidentally this theory would also support the real time MySpace and Facebook pages while also making the time that Sam is traveling fit. Maybe someone now (whoever is showing us Sam's story) made the MySpace/Facebook and did the find815 graffiti to make us think that it was happening when in reality it's done and over and we're just unknowingly along for the ride.

Why someone would do that is beyond me, but it was just something that I thought up one day.

Twinkle said...

Done and over and we're along for the ride. hmmm...that's very interesting...

I hadn't seen the newest confirm/deny/no comment. Wonder if something about this will tie into the flashforwards vs real time stuff in the show. Wonder if that's what they want to make us wonder.

ular97 said...

I am back, and still no wiser than when I left. It seems everyone is still speculating but nothing has really developed. Drats, I was in hopes you all would have it solved for me! The only thing that keeps stinking in my head is the number on the shirt, and the statement about going back to the plotting rooms or what ever it was. Guess I need to go refresh my recollection.

maven said...

I'm sure the activity for us this week will have something to do with Talbot's chart plotter. Doesn't same know anything about Google Maps? LOL

I also checked out the latest confirm/deny/no comment list. It is gratifying that stuff we're getting in the ARG will actually show up on S4, and we can all say "Aha!" I'm still a little confused about the timeline, and still believe that the end of the ARG will coincide with the beginning of S4. I hope that Sam ends up on the show somehow...I really like his character.

maven said...

*Of course, that should be SAM not SAME. Ular97, we should go to the same proof-reading school. LOL

TakesaVillage said...

I was re-watching Catch22 today.I was drawn to the colorful doll Hurley found. It had the same colors as the Baliholidayfun picture.
Is Mr Steggo's password in that?

maven said...

Has anything been done with THIS image from the video? (I took it from DarkUFO's site. I don't know how to do it on my own.) It appeared in the first few seconds of the video.

It almost reminds me of something during TLE. I can't remember where it came up, but a clue was buried in the face of a man...something to do with heavy water. This image kinda reminds of that...that we've been given a piece of picture. I could find no discussions about this "glitch" other than the screen grab on Dark's.

ular97 said...

It looks like we did go to the same proof reading school, an not to successfully. hmmm did I spell th right?

ular97 said...

I am going to put this poor old brain to bed. Get this solved for me before I get on tomorrow, okay?

Ange said...

Hey Gang,
Quick like before I go to bed...we have a Photobucket...yep an OC Photobucket...hey did I mention that we have a Photobucket, where we uploads loads of images for your perusal each and every clue day. It's linked on the side of the front page. I mention this because we also have that image Maven linked to in it from the other night. Not a jab Maven, I just wanted people to maybe wander over and have a look and/or send us images that they capture. It's here.

Also head on over if you care to and have a look at the two most recent pictures e-mailed to us by Sayid's Girl. They're screen grabs she got of Sam in a red blip from video diary 3. It looks like there's a face there. Speculation as to who it could be?

maven said...

Sorry, Ange! Is my face red! I keep forgetting that you have all those images there. I sincerely apologize for not utilizing it more. :(

Still, any thoughts on this "White Blip"?

maven said...

Took a closer look at those two images of a "red face" sent by Sayid'sgirl, too. The second one almost looks like a mirror image of Sam. The first one is very strange. It looks like a completely different profile than Sam...someone with a different hairline and wearing glasses?

Carol Dunstan said...

LOL LOL LOL if nothing else the posts since I was last on have given me a giggle... I might miss Sam if he wasn't on the Hyundai ads. And there will be Underbelly soon enough ;)

I don't think Ockham is as bad as Kevin "Bloody" Wilson but that's just me

I have been thinking the whole t-shirt thing (I went frame by frame and convinced that what appears to be changes is just folds and ripples in the fabric of the space time continum) might just be our wishful thinking... sometimes a t-shirt is just a t-shirt.

Also I think Sam may appear behind the times because he is only giving us one report a week, it's like he doesn't know we have seen some of these conversations and incidents so he mentions them in his weekly video diary. Given that he was able to do a search on Maxwell his net connection isn't as bad as I thought.

Carol Dunstan said...

maven, I was also reminded of that TLE pic with that white blip... it's in the first frame of the whole video. I took a slightly closer look but me heart wasn't in it... I may take a better look if inspiration strikes

Fenris said...

I was probably quite harsh on poor Ocky. I'm sure he's a real gentleman with the ladies. Plus he's pretty tolerant really, to put up with indecisive Sam and slimey Oscar.

AS6 said...

Well a LOT seems to have been said around here since the last time I posted.

Carol - I've actually seen Marshall Napier (Ockham) in a shopping centre food court...true story.

Anyway, I'm off topic. I just wanted to say, as a graduate graphic designer, I'm offering my Photoshop services. If there is anything anyone wants done to any screenshots, let me know and I'll try my best.

I'm looking forward to driving to Kingsford Smith Airport tomorrow to see the Sydney billboard. I'm also looking forward to a new clue.

*crosses fingers* Hope it's something concrete.

Carol Dunstan said...

OT but interesting! I can't claim anything like that LOST related... other than my sob story that LOST denied me the chance of meeting Dom because he had to be in Hawaii to shoot the pilot instead of coming to a convention here.

While you're by that billboard, do you wanna check it for braille?

FYSB said...

Maven I noticed that blip earlier as well.
The online tutorial isn't much help.

as6, can you take a look? do you see what i mean about the lines? the image appears to repeat itself, which is why i thought we might have something.

Ange said...

Good Morning!
Sayid's Girl has been busy with her screen caps! She sent in another picture from Video Diary 3 that shows what might be a ship. I posted them in the Photobucket. I also added a pic. I grabbed one the Christine 1 and did a top to bottom comparison of the two pics.

Maybe as6 could apply some Photoshop skills to the blip and see if there is more to it than meets the eye. Oh, and since you offered :D :D, how about the white blip that Maven/FYSB talked about. I LOVE Lost2010's red ruler strategy BTW. I did something like that with old 3D glasses on the first TLE and it worked! But maybe some Photoshop filters would help us see something.

Ange said...

Might want to skip dark's find815 board this morning if you want to play along with the game. They seem to have hacked the game or something and have the entirety of chapter 4 posted. He has a nice warning right at the top so that you'll know not to look any further though.

I did't really think it was the Christiane 1 but I thought it was a possibility. You think it's the sub, could be. I was thinking maybe the "freighter". I'm going to take another look.

I used to go to Dark's site to watch those but with all the spoilers out there I'm afraid to go look. He posts those in the spoiler section. I still haven't seen the Jin one that everyone says wasn't that good. It's not on the ABC site yet. Guess I'll have to wait unless you know somewhere else they might be posted that is safe.

I have to get back to playing wii for a little while longer (no school)before I can go watch it.
And you're darn right I'm playing through Chapter 4. For me it's more fun that way. Besides I would miss trying to figure things out with you guys.

memphish said...

What are y'all playing on Wii Sayid's Girl? My son's favorite right now is probably Lego Star Wars:The Complete Saga, but as for me, I still like Sports best. We've also tried Wii Play, Big Brain Academy and Super Mario Galaxy. Hubby's also working through Call of Duty 3 and we've got Tiger Woods golf too. Yes, Santa was very generous.

As for Find815, I put my hand over the screen when it came to checking Find815's feed today. DocArzt has apparently posted the Ch. 4 spoiler as well. I'm planning to play along and avoid game spoilers. It's more fun to work them out here.

I love working the clues myself and finding out later I am a day behind but it lets me know I am on the right track.

Fenris, Ange and Jess you do a great job sharing the admin duties. I love the way we all watch out for each other. I loved the red ruler bit. Most of all I am really excited to lurk in the background and be amazed.

Keep up the good work and remember there are lots of us that appreciate all the hard work you do. I love seeing all the posters new and old come and contribute to the cause of solving the puzzles.

We're playing wii sports and carnival games. She also has dancing with the stars and in wii play we absolutely love playing charge. Nothing like riding hurtling cows knocking down scarecrows it's a hoot.

Morning: Thanks for reminding us it's Martin Luther King Day today, Ange!

Saw the new mobisode. Definitely think it's a shout-out to our game!

I saw that Chapter 4 was spoiled over at Dark's last night and quickly looked away (and gave a big sigh of resignation that this will never end with the spoiler-craze). I, too, don't want to know the future (look what it did to Desmond/Charlie/Jack/Kate, etc. LOL). All of us at the OC will try and play this game as it was intended.

Thanks, as6, for offering to check out the various screen grabs from the video. I really think something is in that first White Blip. There's a darkened section in the upper left hand corner. I have none of the photoshop or computer skills to look at that closer.

Kimber- THANKS!!! This is a GREAT group of people, isn't it!

Sigh, I am restricted from playing wii due to shoulder tendonitis. I love the sports though! My kids beat me at everything. They get a kick out of that. LOL

I wonder...
1. Will we pick up more traffic here from folks from over there who want to play and not be spoiled?
2. If the game designers contacted Dark because of the traffic their site generated for the game, will they retract their interaction with the DarkUFO site after the massive spoiler posting?

Watching that new mobisode (at DocArtz' site) makes me think. Nice houses, all the amenities.....what is their deal? The Hostles killed off DHARMA, so whatever they have there, they just took over. Now they live like normal off-island people. And they just let the poor losties live like jungle people. Maybe they use the outside world only for what they need and that's it. Ala..... M Night Shayamalan's The Village.

dark - I thought you had it very well labeled as usual. I just have a tendency to get click-happy so I'm staying away for the moment. Any more hangman in the works?

So, do we think that there will be a hint to the ever elusive password tonight?

Kind of cruel leaving us with a password hunt on a Friday if there was no way to find it til Monday. . . Where's that straightforward Sonya when you need her?
